To honor the anniversay, Peaceful Revolution 1989-90This open-air exhibition, which opened this month at Alexanderplatz, tells the story of how the Wall was brought down through peaceful protest.Brave new Berlin: Preparing for the 20th anniversary of the fall of the WallGiants in the streetIn October the giant puppets of the French street theatre company Royal de Luxe will be re-enacting the dramatic events of 20 years ago at a number of key city sites. Cold War ArtAn exhibition at the German Historical Museum opening on October 3 will focus on the differences and relationship between the art produced in East and West Germany. From the same date, a display of photographs documenting the fall of the Wall will be shown at the Max Liebermann Haus. Museum piecesA number of Berlin's museums are using the anniversary to present special exhibitions focusing on aspects of the division of Berlin and Germany. Those participating include the House at Checkpoint Charlie, the Stasi Museum, the Allied Museum and the GDR Museum (which highlights everyday life in East Germany). Festival of FreedomOn the night of the anniversary (November 9), the Brandenburg Gate will be the focal point of a celebratory party, the highlight of which will be the collapse of a two-kilometre-long chain of giant dominoes, which will symbolise the fall of the Wall. Chip off the old blockFor months after the fall of the Wall, one of the most common sights in the city was of Berliners and tourists hacking away with hammers and chisels for their own souvenir chunks of the hated concrete structure.
